How to Install Wood Slat Wall Panels: A Step-by-Step DIY Guide

Installing wood slat wall panels is one of those projects that looks intimidating until you actually start. Then you realise it is mostly patience and preparation. The installation itself is straightforward. Most people complete a standard feature wall in a day. Some manage it in an afternoon.

This guide walks you through the full process, from wall prep to the final panel. No contractor experience required.

What You Will Need

Before anything else, gather your tools. There is nothing more frustrating than stopping mid-install to hunt for a drill bit.

Tools;

  • Tape measure and pencil

  • Spirit level - a long one, 1.2m if you have it

  • Stud finder

  • Power drill with drill bits

  • Saw - a mitre saw is ideal, but a jigsaw works too

  • Notched trowel or paint roller (for adhesive)

  • Panel pins or finish nails (optional but recommended)

  • Sandpaper - 120 grit

  • Clean lint-free cloths

  • Safety glasses

Materials;

  • Your wood slat panels  make sure you have ordered enough, plus at least one extra panel as a buffer

  • Construction adhesive  a high-strength grab adhesive works well

  • Wood filler (for any gaps or pin holes after installation)

  • Finishing oil or wax if you plan to seal the panels after fitting

Step 1; Measure and Plan Your Layout

This step takes longer than people expect. Do not rush it.

Measure the wall height and width accurately. Write it down. Then calculate how many panels you need based on the panel dimensions 94.5'' tall by 23.6'' wide. For most standard ceiling heights (8–9 feet), a single panel runs floor to ceiling with some to spare. Measure twice, cut once; that saying exists for a reason.

Decide on your layout;

  • Will the panels run floor to ceiling, or are you leaving a gap at the top or bottom?

  • Are you panelling the full wall or a section of it?

  • Where will the panels start; centred on the wall, or starting from one edge?

Starting from the centre of the wall generally looks more balanced, especially on a TV wall or behind a sofa. Starting from one edge is fine for alcoves or narrower walls where you have a natural boundary.

Mark your layout on the wall lightly in pencil before touching the panels. It sounds basic, but visualising it on the wall first prevents expensive mistakes.

Step 2; Prepare the Wall

This is the step most DIYers skip, and it is the one that causes problems later.

The wall needs to be;

  • Clean - no dust, grease, or flaking paint

  • Dry - especially important in kitchens and bathrooms where there may be residual moisture

  • Flat - runs a long straightedge across the wall. If there are bumps or hollows greater than 3–4mm, fill them first with filler and sand smooth once dry

If the wall has existing wallpaper, remove it before installing panels. Adhesive will not bond properly to wallpaper, and it can cause panels to shift or peel over time.

Give the wall a light sand with 120 grit if the paint surface is very smooth and glossy this gives the adhesive something to grip. Wipe down with a clean damp cloth and let it dry fully before moving on.

Step 3; Mark a Level Starting Line

Use your spirit level to draw a perfectly horizontal line across the wall at the height where the bottom of your first panel will sit.

If you are running panels floor to ceiling, this line sits at floor level but check the floor is actually level first. Many floors are not. If the floor dips or rises, it is better to set the panels level and deal with the gap at the bottom with a small skirting strip or trim, rather than following the floor and ending up with panels that visibly lean.

For walls with a baseboard, decide whether you are installing panels above the baseboard or removing it and running panels to the floor. Removing the baseboard and running panels to the floor looks cleaner and more built-in.

Step 4; Apply Adhesive and Install the First Panel

Apply construction adhesive to the back of the first panel in a series of S-curves or horizontal lines, roughly 20–25cm apart. Do not go right to the edges leaving a 2–3cm gap around the perimeter to prevent adhesive squeezing out when the panel is pressed flat.

Alternatively, apply the adhesive directly to the wall in the same pattern. Some people find this gives better coverage. Either method works.

Press the panel firmly to the wall, aligned with your level starting line. Hold it in place for 30–60 seconds. Then step back and check it is sitting correctly level horizontally and plumb vertically before the adhesive sets.

If you are using panel pins for additional security, now is the time. A pin every 30–40cm into the stud line is plenty. The pin heads can be filled and sanded flush once the adhesive has cured.

Important; Once the panel is on the wall and the adhesive is making contact, avoid sliding it sideways to adjust the position. Lift it off and reapply if you need to move it significantly.

Step 5; Continue Along the Wall

Each subsequent panel butts directly against the last. The panels are designed to sit flush edge to edge; there is no tongue and groove, so alignment is done by eye and spirit level.

Check every third panel with your level. Adhesive can cause very slight movement while it is curing, and a small error on panel three becomes a noticeable one by panel six. Correct it early.

Step 6; Cut Panels to Fit

At the edges of the wall, around light switches, plug sockets, and in corners, you will need to cut panels to size.

Straight cuts - a mitre saw or circular saw with a fine-tooth blade gives the cleanest result. Tape the cut line with masking tape first to reduce splintering on the face of the panel.

Cutouts for sockets and switches - measure carefully, mark the cutout on the back of the panel, and use a jigsaw. Take your time. These cuts are visible and mistakes are hard to hide.

Inside corners -cut the edge panel so it butts tightly into the corner. No gap, no overlap. If there is a small gap, a thin bead of wood-coloured caulk fills it cleanly.

Outside corners - this is where a mitre cut at 45 degrees gives the most professional result. Two panels mitred at 45 degrees and meeting at a sharp corner looks far better than a blunt butt joint. If mitring is beyond your current toolkit, a corner trim in a matching finish is a perfectly acceptable alternative.

Step 7; Fill and Finish

Once all panels are installed and the adhesive has fully cured, allow 24 hours minimum to go over the wall carefully.

Fill any pin holes with wood filler in a matching tone. Sand lightly when dry. Check the joins between panels  if any have opened slightly during curing, a thin bead of matching caulk or filler closes them cleanly.

If you want to seal the panels with finishing oil or wax for additional protection, now is the time. This is optional; the panels come pre-finished  but a coat of natural wood oil can deepen the grain and add a layer of protection, particularly in kitchens and higher-traffic areas.

Stand back and look at the finished wall from across the room. Check the panel edges are sitting flush, the lines are running straight, and the finish looks consistent. If something looks slightly off up close, it usually disappears from a normal viewing distance.

A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Start

Do not install directly onto bare concrete or masonry without a substrate. Moisture from masonry can transfer into the wood over time. Fix a thin sheet of moisture-resistant MDF or plywood to the masonry first, then install panels onto that.

In rooms with underfloor heating, leave a small expansion gap at the base of the panels. Radiant heat can cause wood to expand slightly.

Final Thoughts

A wood slat wall panel installation done well is one of the most satisfying DIY projects you can take on. The preparation takes longer than the installation, but it is what makes the difference between a result that looks professional and one that looks like a weekend project.

Take your time on the wall prep. Check your levels constantly.
